South Africa

The new Government of National Unity established in 1995 the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) to investigate gross human rights violations during the apartheid years. The TRC lasted until 2002 and it found that male detainees experienced forced nudity, rape, insertion of objects into bodily orifices, and beating and electric shocks to genitals. Despite the fact that the TRC failed to identify sexual violence as “sexual violence” as such in a consistent manner, it acknowledged that male survivors of sexual violence had suffered violations.
