Since the overthrow of the military regime of President Siad Barre in 1991, Somalia has collapsed into a situation of protracted armed conflict. Continued insecurity, weak rule of law and lack of humanitarian access have aggravated sexual violence against women, men, girls and boys. In December 2017, the UN Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) documented the rape and execution of boys by Al-Shabaab for alleged homosexual conduct.
